چکیده

Many complex telecommunication and computer networks can be successfully modelled as networks of queues for the purpose of performance evaluation. Simulators for such systems are typically programmed on von Neumann computers using the techniques of discrete event simulation. As the complexity of the systems being modelled increases, software simulators are less capable of providing acceptable solutions. The principal problems are that frequently too much time is needed to produce sufficiently accurate performance measures and that the complexity of the simulation software has led to difficulties in the design, maintenance and extension of the models. The need for fast execution of large simulation models has resulted in much research into the design of parallel, discrete event simulators [1,2]. Despite this effort, the apparent solution of employing networks of parallel computers has not been able to offer adequate speed improvements. For larger systems especially, reductions in execution time do not correlate favourably with increases in the degree of parallelism employed in the simulator. Meanwhile highly parallel systems have exacerbated the problems related to the complexity of the simulation software.

A simulation tool for dynamically reconfigurable field programmable gate arrays

 The emergence of static memory–based FPGAs that are capable of being dynamically reconfigured, i.e. partially reconfigured while active, has resulted in research into new methods of digital systems synthesis. At present, however, there are virtually no CAD tools to support the design of digital systems using dynamic reconfiguration. This paper reports on an investigation of new simulation too...

Operation Scheduling in a Reconfigurable Computing Environment

We consider the problem of scheduling the operations of a data flow graph in a reconfigurable computing environment. In the recent years, FPGAs have become highly popular as a medium to rapidly prototype complex systems. As the FPGA technology improves in terms of speeds and the number of gates/chip, FPGAs are being used in system construction and not just for prototyping. Some innovations such...

A review of high-level synthesis for dynamically reconfigurable FPGAs

Dynamically Reconfigurable Field Programmable Gate Arrays (DR FPGAs) change many of the basic assumptions of what hardware is. DR FPGA-based dynamically reconfigurable computing has become a powerful methodology for achieving high performance while minimizing the resource required in the implementation of many applications. The key to harnessing the power of DR FPGAs for most applications is to...

Performance Analysis of Various Fragmentation Techniques in Runtime Partially Reconfigurable FPGA

Reconfigurable devices, such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), are very popular in today’s embedded systems design due to their low-cost, high-performance and flexibility. Partially Runtime-Reconfigurable (PRTR) FPGAs allow hardware tasks to be placed and removed dynamically at runtime. A novel 2D area fragmentation metric that takes into account feasibility of placement of future task...

Software Fault Tolerance Using Dynamically Reconfigurable FPGAs

An emerging class of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) permits partial reconnguration of the device without disturbing the rest of the array { even while the device is operating. Dynamic device reconnguration allows novel approaches to the migration of algorithms from software to hardware. New simulation tools are required in order to fully exploit the FPGA's versatility. We demonstrate ho...
